Co.'s Clansman arrived from her weekly trip to Tauranga with a number of passengers and the following freight:—l 39 boxes fruit, 9 cases cheese, 12 sacks potatoes, and 20 hides.

By telegraphic advice from Lyttelton we learn of the arrival there of the American barque Abiel Abbott, which sailed from Brisbane on January Sth for this port, whither she was fixed to load gum for New York. We regret to state that during the voyage down from Queensland the mind of Captain Nickerson became unhinged, and it was mainly to seek medical aid for him that the vessel put into the Canterbury port. The Abiel Abbott on her outward voyage from New York to Brisbane had very stormy weather, and reached port after an exceptionally long passage of 146 days, after having been given up as lost. It is probable that the dangers and anxieties of thi3 trying voyage have had a great deal to do with the undermining of Captain Nickerson's intellect. Yesterday afternoon, about three o'clock, the Union S.S. Co.'s Australia arrived from Wellington and East Coast ports, with passengers and cargo. She left Wellington 011 the 6th instant, at 3 p.m., and arrived at .Napier on the 7th, at 7 p.m. Sailing the same night at midnight, she arrived at Gisborne on the Bth, at 11.30 a.m., and proceeded on her voyage four hours later. She called at sTologa Bay, Tokomaru, Waipiro, Awanui, ,iind Orcti Point, and arrived alongside the wharf a3 above, having experienced fine "weather throughout the passage until entering the Gulf, when heavy rain fell. On Saturday evening the s.s. lona returned I from Mercury Bay, with freight and passen- j gers. The recently launched dynamite gun cruiser Vesuvius (the latest addition to the United States Navy) made her trial trip the other day, and achieved the good result of .an average speed of 21 "47 knots per hour. She is the first vessel fitted with Zalinski's .patent pneumatic guns and torpedo throwers, and the range, accuracy, and destructive fiower of this new species of armament is yet 10 be ascertained, and the results of the trials find experiments are eagerly awaited. Should these prove satisfactory, it is likely that several other vessels of similar type will be built, for there are at present Bills before Congress for the construction of two new steel rams with heavy rilled dynamite guns und torpedo shooters, and also for two new tteel cruisers.

Yesterday afternoon the whaleship Alaska arrived from Russell, which port she left on Wednesday last, but owing to calms prevailing until yesterday morning, her progress Was slow. The barque comes here for the purpose of being docked, on account of her leaking. In August of last year the Alaska was docked at Sydney, New South Wales, and thoroughly overhauled, and the leak stopped, but after the vessel had been out a few weeks it was found that the leak had started again, making it necessary for her to make port for repairs. The defective spot Las been located just under the foremast. Captain Fisher expects to remain here for about a week, but it is not yet settled whether the ship will be taken into the Calliope Dock or the Auckland Dock. H.M.s. Raven arrived about midnight from the South, and anchored at the man-of-war anchorage. The other vessels of the squadron are working their way northwards, and on Saturday the Orlando left Port Chalmers for Akaroa.
