SERIOUS AFFRAY IN AMERICA.

A CONFLICT BETWEEN WHITES

AND NEGROES.

New York, December 18. Information has been received of a serious conflict between the whites and negroes at Wahalak, a small town in Mississippi. The dispute arose over an attempted rescue of a negro who had been arrested, and in the struggle 12 whites and 100 negroes were wounded. The whites succeeded in driving their opponents into the swamp ; but further fighting is expected to take place.

Received December 20,1.15 a.m.

New York, December 19. It appears that the conflict between the whites and negroes at Wahalak has been much exaggerated. The disturbance was not so serious as at first represented.
