While a young man named Andrews, son of a salesman, was cutting some pork in the Smithfield Meat Market, a few days ago, the knife slipped, and struck him in the groin, and he died shortly afterwards. Indignation is being loudly expressed bv sheep-owners in this neighbourhood at the treatment Sheep-inspector Elliot has received at the hands of his superior officers. Mr. Elliot is considered in this neighbourhood to be a conscientious and painstaking officer, well acquainted with his duties, and shrinks from no trouble so that he may fulfil them with credit to himself and the department under which he holds office. He has also given satisfaction to the owners of sheep with whom he has come in contact, ana consequently has their confidence. To dismiss' an officer for an error, real or supposed, in his diagnosis of a partially developed disease, would seem exceedingly harsh, but to dismiss him because his diagnosis differed from that of two of his superior officers who also differed from each other, would, to most men, seem a measure of injustice hardly obtainable in this country. Unless some better and more tangible reason is given than has yet been adduced, Elliot's removal will be resented by all who are acquainted with the circumstances, and bitter animosity will be shown to his successor, although it may be personally undeserved.—[Mahuxaogi Correspondent.]
