BANQUET TO CONSUL GRIFFIN.
A number of the representative citizens of Sydney who were desirous of recognising in some public manner the services rendered to the colony by Consul G. W. Griffin, in connection with the introduction of Australian wool into the United States of America, entertained that gentleman on Wednesday evening, September 12, at a banquet which was held at the Exchange Hotel. About 100 gentlemen sat down to an excellent dinner. The chair was occupied by the Hon. S. A. Joseph, M.L.C., president of the Chamber of Commerce, who had on his right the guest, and on his left the Hon. Sir Alfred Stephen, G.C.M.G. There were also present the Premier (Sir Henry Parkes), the President of the Legislative Council (Sir John Hay), Sir John Robertson, Sir Patrick Jennings, the Colonial Treasurer (Hon. J. F. Burns), and the Minister for Works (Hon. John Sutherland). The toast of the evening, which was very cordially received, was proposed by Sir Alfred Stephen. Mr. Griffin acknowledged the compliment in an able speech, which was received with much favour. Amongst the other toasts honoured was that of " Our American Cousins," which was submitted by Sir Henry Parkes.
