POLICE COURT.— [Before Dr. Giles, R.M.)
Drckkexxess.—Two persons were punished for drunkenness.
Larceny. — Margaret Barstow pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing an overcoat, value l'2s, the property of A. Hea\y, and was sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labour.
Uttering.—Edward Murphy was charged that on the Ist day of June he did unlawfully, with intent to defraud, utter a promissory note for the sum of £22 8s 2d. The case was remanded till Wednesday. Mr. G. M. Johnston appeared for the defendant, and applied for bail. He urged that as the prisoner was a country settler, residing at Bombay, and therefore unknown in Auckland, the naming of a large sum for bail would be tantamount to refusing it altogether. His Worship granted bail—prisoner in one surety of £75, and two sureties of £35 each.
Maintenance.—Chas. Mens was charged with refusing to comply with an order of the Court, that he should pay 5s a week for the support of each of his three children until they attained the age of 14 years, the payments being in arrears to the 13th July last to the amount of £8. Mrs. Mens gave evidence, and said the youngest child had attained the age of 14 on July 14 last. Defendant was in work, and able to pay. Evidence was also given by defendant. He was employed only on three days per week, but was willing to pay by instalments. His Worship made an order that 30s per month be paid.
