From Newcastle the barque Loongana sailed for this pore on the Bth inst. with a cargo of coal. It has been definitely decided that the ship Piako will not be placed on the berth here for London, but will, when discharged, take in what Auckland consignments oiler and proceed South to complete. The barque Kentish Lass which recently took down a cargo of timber from the Kaipara, is to load back to Auckland with produce. The brigantine Lady Mabel is loading black Jliamonds at Newcastle for this port. Early yesterday the schooner Medora arrived from her regular round to northern Jjorts. She is berthed at the railway wharf to discharge her cargo, which consists of 4 tons bark, 46 bags rock oysters, 12") sacks sand, -30 s.*i.cks and 7 cases gum, 4 packages hides and sundries.

The brigantine Defiance has finished loadIng, and Mill probably clear and sail today for Melbourne, From Russell the Government steamer Stella will start to-day on a cruise to the jKermadec Islands.

Last night the Northern S.S. Co.'s Douglas arrived from Bay of Plenty p/its with passengers, and a cargo consisting of 250 sucks maize. £0 packages sundries, and 2 horses. Shortly after midnight the s.-. Wainui, Captain Crawshaw, arrived from Westport and Wellington with cargo and passengers. Of the trip Mr. A. Waiker. the purser, furnishes the following report :—The Wainui left Weetport on the 12th instant at 1.30 a.m., and arrived at Wellington at "2.30 a.m. on tin.J3th, where she embarked mails and passeneercs ex R.M. s.s. Ruapehu from London, and left at 3.30 p.m. the same d.iy. She cleared Cape Palliser at 7 p.m., and passed Portland Island at 4.15 on the 14th : the East Capc\ras rounded at 2.50 a.m. oji the loth; Cape Colville was abeam at ft. 10 p.m., and thesteamer made fast to the Queen-street Wharf at 12.30 a.m. on the JG'th. When off Cape Runaway a barque, steering north, was sighted. Variable "winds with fine weather Were experienced throughout the trip. The Princess Josephine, the pioneer Steamer in the direct service recently established between Antwerp and Australia, arrived at Melbourne on the Ist instant. She Is a Belgian vessel, and is owned at Antwerp, where she was built some two years ago. She is the first Belgian steamship which has ever visited these colonies, and Belgian merchandise and manufactures, instead of being carried in German or British vessels to Aue"tralia, are now in a fair way of being conveyed in ships belonging to the National Marine. The Princess Josephine is owned by the Society Cockerill, of Antwerp, who have 11 other steamers in the Mediterranean and Spanish trade. This is their first dash into Australian waters. The Soci6te Cockerill is a company having very extensive transactions in iron."and in manufactures in iron. Railway material, comprising rails and rolling stock, shins of war a,nd ships of commerce, engines of all descriptions and sizes, guns of large or small calibre, anchors, cranes, etc., are all turned out at this establishment. The Princess Josephine Las all the appearance of belonging to such a company. Her decks, masts, yards, and deckhouses are all of iron, and it is only in the saloon where there is a departure from this iron rule. The steamer has evidently been designed for use, and not for show or for ornamental purposes. She is a great carrier, and will turn out an immense cargo for her tonnage. Her register is 13SI tons, but the gross measurement is over 2300 tons. Tiie freight on board comprises steel rails and miscellaneous merchandise. There are also shipments of exhibits lor the Centennial show, and amongst these are a clock and bell of ingenious manufacture. The steamer is driven by compound engines of the inverted cylinder type. They are of 800 horsepower effective, and are "economic in >neir working, the consumption of coal being very moderate. Excessive speed, however, not aimed at or attempted. The steamer is totted with all the usual mechanical appliances lor the taking in or discharge of cargo, and *or steering and working the windlass, etc. J.he Princess Josephine has a snua, well-ap-pointed saloon aft, but it is of limited proportions. Ihe steamer is schooner tig-'ed and can carry a sufficiency of canvas if *asck»us accident should befall the machinery O.ptam Louis Meyer.who has command of "the steamer, reports taking a departure from Antwerp on May 25.
