THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS.
DEFEAT OF ALL-ENGLAND. [press association.] London, July 17. The firsb of the three matches between All England and the Australian Eleven was begun at Lords yesterday. Abel and T. C. O'Brien replaced Shuter and Attewell in the English team, the latter being unable to play, and Boyle and Lyons stood out of the colonial eleven. Woods, an Australian bowler of much promise, now in residence at Cambridge, made his first appearance with the Australians. Continuous rain on Sunday spoiled the wicket, and the game resolved itself into a contest between bowlers on either side, good batting being out of the question. In the end, Turner and Ferris proved too much for the Englishmen, who were beaten by 61 runs. McDonnell won the toss, and determined to take advantage of the first use of the wicket before ifc got cut up. The total of the innings was 116, made up as follows :— Bannerman, 0 ; McDonnell, 22 ; Trott, 0 ; Bonner, 6 ; Blackham, 22 ; Woods, IS ; Turner, 3 ; Jarvis, 3 ; Worrall, 2; Ferris, 14 ; Edwards, 21 ; extras, 5 : total, 116. When the Englishmen went in Briggs alone was able to make any stand against the bowling, and except his 17, which wa» obtained by good cricket, Grace's 10 was the only double figure. With 63 to the good the Australians began their second innings, but the wicketo by this time was completely in favour of the bowlere, and they were all disposed of by Lohmann, Peel, and Briggs for 60. Turner showed some defence for his 12, and towards the end Ferris hit out pluckily, and added 20 to what promised to be a very small score. Bannerman, 0 ; McDonnell, 1; Trott, 3; Bonner, 8 ; Blackham, 1; Jarvis, 3; Turner, 12 ; Edwards, 0 ; Woods, 4; Worrall, 4; Ferris, 20; extras, 4: total, 60. Ferris and Turner bowled throughout unchanged, and wero admirably seconded by Blackham. The Victorian wicketkeeper was in brilliant form, as ho stumped four batsmen and not a single extra was recorded.
