MINING DISASTER.
GREAT LOSS OF LIFE. [press association.] Capetown, July 12. A fire at the entrance of the Great De Beer mine, Kimberley, has entombed 800 miners, and it is feared that 500 have perished. Capetown, July 13. The accident in the De Beer mine, Kimberley, was caused by ignition in the shaft preventing the men working in the mine from getting out, and many were suffocated by smoke. 43 white men and 500 natives were rescued. The damage is estimated at £20,000. A quantity of dynamite was exploded in tne mine in order to clear the galleries from the dead.
It is believed the fatalities will amount to 224, of which 24 are white men.
