THE TOTALISATOR.

MEETING OF THE SELECT COMMITTEE. [BY TELEGRAPH.SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. ] Wellington, Monday. The Select Committee of the Legislative Council appointed to inquire into the working of the totalisator met to-day. The secretary of the Nelson Racing Club gave evidence before the committee. I understand that it was to the effect that the totalisator should only be restricted to the larger clubs, where at least £3000 in stakes are added. It is said the general opinion of the larger clubs is in the same direction, and that the machine should not be used as at present at every petty country meeting. The impression is that, so far as the Legislative Council is concerned, no legislation will take place this session.
