It has been decided not l to hold a magisterial inquiry into the circumstances, as the Marine Department consider the captain's certificate is not called into question, it being merely matter of berthing.
Christchurch, Tuesday. ; • George McCombie alias Simpson was arrested this afternoon on a charge of forgery and uttering, at Wellington, on June 22. .-0 J.
George .Kyerson, William Batchelor, and Thomas H. Batchelor were committed for trial at Rangiora, to-day, on a charge of stealing 360 sheep belonging to C. Ensor and G. B. Harkey. • In the Supreme Court to-day Peter Brown and Richard Morris Griffith, charged with stealing wheat from the Harbour Board shed at Lyttelton, were acquitted. John O'Neill, a well-known cattle dealer of Woolston, died suddenly about twelve last night. Heart disease is the supposod cause of death.
Duxedin, Tuesday. For the Plumpton coursing meeting here' there are 55 nominators for All-aged Stakes, and 53 for the St. Leger. At the Supreme Court, in the case of James Hooper, charged with feloniously wounding, with intent to kill, Tliomaa Black, the jury, after being locked up two hours, returned a verdict of not guilty of felony, but guilty of wounding. Sentence was deferred.
