THE MINING REVIVAL.

ANOTHER CLAIM FLOATED IN LONDON.

CAPITAL £100,000. OPERATIONS AT WAITEKAURL [BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Tuesday. I am informed on reliable authority that the Jubilee Special Claim, at Waitekauri, has been successfully placed on the London inarkot by Mr. E. K Cooper, who left here on that mission in February last. Mr. E. M. Corbetb, the well-known mining engineer, has received a cablegram from Mr. Cooper, announcing the formation of an English company ■ with capital of £100,000, and authorising him to employ a number of men at once to develop the proporty, stating that a sum of money would be forwarded at once for that purpose. Mr. Cooper also announces that the ten tons of ore selected from the claim and taken home by him realised £50 per ton. This information caused gone ral satisfaction here, and is looked upon as of equal importance to tho sale of the VVaiorongomai property a few weeks back. The whole country between Marototo and Waitokauri is now pegged out. ShariwMAKKEt.— Cambria, 9s; Manukau, 2s Id, sellers 2s 3d, buyers 2s Id ; Moanatairi, sellers 10s (sd; Alburnia, sellers 3s; Caledonian, 4m Sd, buyers 4s 6d ; Saxon, buyers 3s 6d; Tronton, buyers, 2s 3d ; Paroquet, sellers 2s 6d, buyers 2s. Cambria.—2olbs picked stone came to hand to-day from No. 5 leader in the 11th sbope. In working this leader nt No. 2 level a considerable quantity of good stone was obtainod just above the point where the haul wad made to-day, so it is quite probable the remainder of the block will prove highly remunerative. Tho usual fortnightly cleaning up and retorting takes place to-morrow, and a good payable return is anticipated. Paeroa, Tuesday. The floating of tho Jubilee special claim at Waitekauri by Mr. E. K. Cooper in London is causing a good deal of excitement

Nearly tho whole of Waitekauri has been pegged off, and there is every likelihood of a big spurt being put on in this district. The name of tho Eclipse claim has beon altered to the Saxon Gold and Silver Mining Co., and Messrs. Neal and party of the Thames have applied for a lease of the ground under this name. [from ouh own* correspondents.] Thames, Monday. WAIOMO. Paroquet.—Tho drive northwards at No. 3 level has beon driven a distance of 80 feet since Mr. Wilson assumed the management, the reef averaging from 3 to 4 feet in thickness, and maintaining ono uniform quality. For the past fow days this drive ha? been at a standstill to enable the men to timber it securely, and prepare for the stopes coming in. Ihe southward drive has been extended a distance of 22 foet, the reef in tho face boing about 5 feet in width, and showing strong colours of gold. Four stopes are in progress above tne level on tho northward end of tho Waiomo winze, and two southward. Tho winze on the hang-

ingwall reef is now nearly down to the requisite depth, and the manager intends commencing to drive northward on the reef towards tho junction with tho main lode about the end of the present weok. At No. 1 level a contract has been let for driving northward on the main reof, whore it is 3 feet in width, and shows gold freely. The stampers at the battery had to be hung up again on Thursday last, owing to insufficiency of water, but tho berdans are kept going on the ripple tailings. On Saturday the amalgam on hand, obtained from about 127 loads, was retorted, for a yield of 1420z 2dwte gold, and this on being molted was reduced to 1370z lOdwte, valued at £3 9s 6d per ounce, an extremely good price. It should bo borne in mind that this return is from tho plates alone, as the blanket tailings still remain on hand, and which are supposed to contain a largo percentage of the precious metal. None of the tailings conveyed to tho Askham-Molloy works have yot been treated. The mine is now well opened up, and in capable of supplying a large output of quartz, but tho motive power at the battery is insufficient, and requires consideration as to how to remedy tho matter. The hopper at tho mine is full of quartz, and a considerable supply remains at the battery, while carters aro employed daily in bringing more down from tho mine.

MAROTOTO. Several now leases have been pegged out south of McDonough's find, on a parallel reef, which, when opened up, shows a width of 30 fcot, and yields a good prospect of gold on panning. WHANGAMATA. Saturday. Since my last, several business and residence sites have been tnUen up, which looks as if wo are going to havo a township here shortly. Mr. Davis, an old resident, is about to erecfc % weatherboard building, with tho intention of commencing business as a knight of tho cloaver. Air. S. C. Macky is here looking after his and several Auckland capitalists' interests in tho claims here. He has a good opinion of this district, and loolcr forward to a payable field being soon opened up. I sond you a few mining items, giving a fow details as to what is being done in the principal claims here. Goldwater. —lho men are hard at it in tho low level. It is a splendid sandstone country, but rather difficult to work on account of so many iron soatns. The reef i» expected bo be cut in about a week's time. No news has reached here as yet ro the 11 tons of ore shipped to Adelaide by this company a short time ago. Younq Colonial.—ln this mine C. McWilliams and party have unearthed a reef about four feet thick, with a very good show of sulphide of silver in it, equal, if not better, than anything I have yet seen on the fiold, excepting the Prospectors'. JusT-JN-TrME.—A Tow level (which will givo them about 30 feet of backs) is being driven to cut tho reef at a point immediately underneath a winze which waa sunk from the surface, in which first-clase ore wan obtained. Tho reef is expected to be to hand in a day or two. Brooan.—Two men are engaged driving tho low level through a fair sandstone country. The Goldwatcr reef is expected to bo met with in about 100 feet driving from the commencement. The manager has one hand engaged erecting a commodious hut and blacksmith's shop for tho company. Ouskrver. — Prospecting operations are still being carried on in this mine with fair results. Three very fine reefs are now oxpoHed to tho view of tho visitor, in which fair prospects are obtained. Thk biLVRR Kino is a pieco of ground lately pegged out. It lies to the north-west of the Oborver, and commands a great portion of tho Prospector's reef, also two others —notably the Observer and the Just in Time. At its nortli end is the far-famed Herald, of which great things aro expected. Hkiiald.—lt is a great pity to see such a fine property lying idle all on account of the Government not purchasing from tho native owners tho right to mine on native land. The same remarks refer to the Nevada and tho Free Lance, which are also on native lands.

There are about 10,000 acres of argentiferous land held by the natives in the immediate locality on which prospecting is prohibited, and it is a well-known fact amongst tbe miners here that the reefs which lmvc already been discovered here strike into the native ground. Here is a chance for our member at the forthcoming session.

MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Cambria.—The crosscut at No. 4 level is now in a distance of 381 feet from the shaft. This crosscut is going through splendidlooking sandstone country. The winze on the main reef below No. 3 level in now down a depth of 60 feet. There are about 2 feet of the hariKingwall portion of the reef being carried down in the winze. There is some nice-looking mineral through the quartos. Colours of gold were seen through the quartz when breaking it down. The rise on the main reef above No. 3 level is up a. height of 25 feet. There are about 6 inches of the hangingwall portion of the reef, currying nice-looking mineral. Colours of gold were scon when breaking down the stringers on th« hangingwall aide of the reof. The second stope weet on the No. 7 lead is along 61 feet In tho face of this etope the leader is about

4 inches in thickness. Gold was seen freely through the quartz when breaking down the leader. The ninth stope, west on No. 1 leader, is along 77 feet. The leader in the face of this stope is about two feet in thickness. Colours of gold were seen through the quartz when breaking down the leader. The tenth stope, west on No. 1 leader, is along 64 feet. The leader in the face of this stope is about two feet in thicknesa. Gold was seen through the quartz when breaking down the leader. The tenth stope, east on No. 1 leader, is along 38 feet. The leader in the face of the stopo is about 18 inches. Gold was seen through the quartz when breaking down the leader. The eleventh stope on the Nos. 4 and 5 leaders is along 10 foet. Gold was seen freely through the quartz when breaking down No. 5 leader. The twelfth stope on No. 6 leader is along 10 feet. The leader in the face of this slope is four inches in thickness. Gold was seen freely through the quartz when breaking down the leader. 78 loads of quartz have been crushed during the week for the return of 3560z of amalgam, and from seveu loads of tailings put through the berdans 16oz amalgam. The battery winding, engine, and air compressor are in good working order. The mine manager wired yesterday :—" 201 be picked stone from eleventh stope on No. 5 leader." New Alburnia Mine.—The crushing of 21 loads of quartz and 701b of picked stone was finished yesterday, for the yield of 650z melted gold. The general dirt yielded 30oz, or at the rate of ozs to the lode, and the picked stone produced 35 oz of gold. On the whole, I think the return very satisfactory for although the dirt could be more carefully sorted, and made to give a much higher yielcf per ton, I deemed it advisable to save fully a foot of the lode for crushing dirt, rejecting only portions of buck reef, where it could be conveniently picked out. The eastern drive was advanced 6 feet during the week. At this point communication was effected with the Success hangingwall drive, so that now the block is well ventilated the stopes can be worked upward to better advantage. The second stope west has been carried along 6 feet, the second stope east 8 feet for the week. Two hands were employed at the battery, looking after crushing.
