A RAILWAY SCHEME OPPOSED. Perth (W.A.), March 28. The Legislative Council have refused to authorise the contract with the Hampton Plains Railway syndicate. The Surveyor-General urged that they had better wait for the results of similar enterprises now in hand before encouraging others. He believed that the proposed line would ruin the promoters, and condemned the alienation of any more large areas of land* to' absentees.
GROCOCK'S SENTENCE.
Melbourne, March 28.
Grocock's sentence has been commuted to fifteen years' imprisonment, and two floggings of fifteen lashes each.
THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.
Melbourne, March 28. In the Melbourne Exhibition, France has been allotted 11,000 feet, and Germany 27,000 feet of extra space.
A RUSH OF MINERS.
