THE UNIVERSITY CALENDAR.

We have received a copy of the Auckland University College Calendar for the year 1888. With the exception of a few trifling alterations, it is the same as that of last year. In the regulations with reference to the B.A. degree an amendment has been made, which says that " no candidate shall present himself for examination in more than two out of the four following subjects— namely, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, ana Natural Science. The restriction with respect to the four subjects lastnamed shall not apply to the examinations of ISBS." Students will thus in future be rather more restricted than formerly in their choice of the six subjects necessary for the B.A. degree. The alteration has apparently been made to render the examination for the B.A. more of a literary than of a scientific character; a change the wisdom of which is more than doubtful in a new country like this. The lists of those who passed in the various subjects at the annual examination are arranged alphabetically. We would suggest that in future they be arranged in order of merit. Interesting information would thus bo furnished with respect to the relative capacities of the male and female students of Auckland.

As far as can be gathered from the present lists the wise maidens show to advantage in classics. This was to be expected, as we all know they have the "gift o' the gab." Miss Agneta Ramsey is an illustrious example of this fact, as it was in classics that she shone so brightly. In mathematics, on the other hand, the males seem to have the best of it. This also was to be expected, as we all know the deal' creatures are not logical. The result is that they utterly fail to compete with the masculine brain in matters mathematical.
