PRESENTATIONS.

AUCKLAND TRAINING COLLEGE. The occasion of the examination of the students of the Auckland Training College was taken advantage of on Jan. 10 at one clock, to mate presentations to Mr. Arthur Gifford, M.A., who is about_ leaving Auckland to tans tne position of firsc assistant in the Napier High School, and to the Rev. E. H. Gulliver, the Principal of the College, whose connection with the institution is expected to cease in consequence of the determination of Parliament not to continue institutions of this class. Mr. S. Luke, chairman of the Board of Education, and Mr. Theo. Cooper, a member of the Board, were present, and there was a large attendance of the students The first presentation made -was to Mr. Gifford. It consisted of a beautiful shield of photographs, 50 in number, elegantly arranged by Mr. Josiah Martin. Tne centre group consisted of the Rev. E. H. Gulliver, Messrs. Gifford and Worthington, and Dr. McArthur. Underneath, in illuminated letters, was the following inscription : — "Presented on the occasion of his leaving, with many good wishes, to Arthur Gif ford, Esq., M.A., by the staff and j students past and present of the Auckland Training College a3 a souvenir of his five } years' connection with the institution, and in high appreciation of the faithful and patient way in which during that time he has ful- | filled his duties as assistant master,' 1 The shield i 3 neatly framed. Rev. E. H. Gci.liver, in making the presentation to Mr. Gifford, spoke of the regret a parting with him, aud of uis usefulness as a teacher. Mr. Giffobd responded, and wished to each and all every success which it was possible to attain, and which they deserved. Miss Hodli> then addressed the Rev, Mr, Gulliver, and made a presentation, which consisted of a handsome shield, containing twenty-eight photographs, the smaller number being from the fact that it was from the present students only, and the inscription was similar in character to that on the other shield presented to Mr. Gifford. The Rev. Mr. Gulliver gratefully acknowledged the presentation, aud thanked them for their beautiful gift and the kind expressions which accompanied it.

On the Ist January, at the conclusion of I the eleven o'clock mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, the members of the choir presented the Kev. Dr. Kgan, musical director, with a handsome gold-mounted baton, ac ■ companied by an address. Tue honorary bronze medal of the RoylS Humane Society has been awarded to Co stable Luke McDonald, of the Water Police force, in recognition of his having saved a man from drowning in March last, by leaping into the harbour from the Railway Wharf and bringing the man to shore. Mr. E. B. Miller, the manager of the New Zealand Sugar Refining Company, Chelsea, returned by the Waihoraon the 17th January, after a trip to England, and was ac- • companied by Mrs. Miller. The employes | of the Sugar Company becoming aware of the i fact of his probable return, made arrangements to accord to their manager and his wife a cordial welcome, the details of which were ably carried out. Mr. and Mrs. Miller on entering their home found that the employes had subscribed for and purchased a handsome marble timepiece, which was conspicuously placed in the drawing room. It bears the following inscription :— " Presented to Mr, and Mrs. E. B. Miller by the emI ployes of the Sugar Refining Company as a wedding gift. Auckand, January 17, ISSB." I At a meeting of friends and supporters of i the Hon. John Bryce on January 11, at Wanganui, it was decided to present him with a piece of sterling silver plats. A handsome subscription was raised in the room, and a committee appointed to raise donations i throughout the district. An illuminated address was presented to 1 the Bishop of Waiapu by his clergy previous ; to his departure to attend the Lambeth i Conference.
