Wellington, Monday.' Probate under the will of the late Hon.' John Johnston was granted on Friday. It is expected the amount left is close on half a million. Mrs. Johnston is to receive £20,000 and a house and ground, in addition to sharing the balance of the estate equally with five other members of the family.

Christohurch, Monday. The subscriptions in aid of the United Brigade Competition amount to £212, besides trophies to the value of £80. Lieutenant Smith, of the Christohurch brigade, gives in addition a special prize of £30 for life* saving apparatus. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College to-day, it was stated that two young gentlemen just arrived from England had entered the Lincoln Agricultural School as pupils, and that inquiries had been received from home asking if there :wer» vacancies for other candidates.
