London, December 15. The prospectus of the Kilkivan Mining Co., with a capital of £100,000, has been issued.

Forty-five applications have been received for the Art Mastership at the Melbourne University, including several masters of the leading schools of art.

Sir Graham Berry, Agent-General for Victoria, has protested against .France continuing the deportation of recidivistes to New Caledonia, and has urged the French Government to at least abstain from further shipments pending the result of friendly parleying. Sir Henry Holland intends to submit the question to the Cabinet on Saturday, but he is not hopeful that a fresh protest will result in the abolition of convictism in the Pacific.

The London Committee of the Melbourne Exhibition are unanimous in advising Victoria to assist in obtaining the collection of pictures in the manner already suggested, otherwise the efforts to obtain the collection will prove unsuccessful. Mr. Wardle, chairman of the silk section at Manchester, offers to give an exhibition of silk culture at the Melbourne Exhibition if the Commissioners are pledged to assist him. The bankruptcy examination of Lord Loftus has been adjourned until January 26. It is rumoured that Sir F. A. Weld will succeed Sir J. Pope Hennessy as Governor of the Mauritius.

The sovereignty of New Guinea will be proclaimed in three months, and Sir Anthony Musgrave, Governor of Queensland, will receive the appointment of Colonial Secretary.
