AUCKLAND SOCIETY OF ARTS.

BLACK AND WHITE EXHIBITION. The Society of Arts takes a new departure this year, and, in addition to the regular Autumn Exhibition held in April, will hold a Spring Exhibition, opening on Wednesday next. This will consist of black and white, and other sketches, illustrations by members of the Mahlstick Club, engravings, prints, etchings, etc., and will be held in a suite of rooms on the upper floor of the Art Gallery Building, the one of which has been granted by the City Council. Artists are taking great interest in this new course of action of the Society, and a large and varied collection of exhibits is assured. The few but vigorous specimens of black and white on the walls of the Society's recent exhibition of paintings whetted public curiosity in this direction, while the Mahlstick sketches, which were sbonn some fiteen months ago at the first conversazione of the Auckland Atheneum, created quite an enthusiasm by affording proof that a ne«v and spirited school of painting and design was actively at work in our midst. Since then the Mahlstiok club, which has been in existence some three years, and includes 'in its ranks most of our leading artists, has farther extended its sphere of usefulness, and can add the sketches of the last fifteen months to its original exhibits. There will also, besides etchings, engravings, &0., be a loan collection of black and white, and other sketches. To all appearance the forthcoming exhibition will be of a most attractive character, as well as most instructive from an artistic point of view. We hope that the energy of the society will be duly appreciated by the general public, and the rooms crowded by visitors to pay their respect to our nascent and existing (local talent. The exhibition will remain open - till Monday, the 31st October.
