[reuter's TELEGRAM.J Melbourne, October 4. The betting on the Caulfield Cup is : 10 to 1 against Silvermine and Volcano, 17 to 1 Meteor, and 20 to 1 against Pasha, Later. The latest betting on the Caulfield Cup is Bto 1 against Silvermine. The other prices are unchanged.

The weather was still unfavourable, being showery, with a cold wind ; the attendance | consequently was small. The course was in good order despite the rain, and soma very good racing was witnessed. Strenuous was first away, and shared the lead with Pouawa and Rivulet and Orwell in turn until fairly into the straight, when Clifford, who had been riding a waiting race, brought Pearl to the front, and cutting down Strenuous and Orwell, came away, and won comfortably by half a length from Orwell, Strenuous afair third, Rivulet fourth, Pouawa fifth, and The Shah sixth. An excellent start was effected, Lady Florin being the first to show in front with Maxim lying next. Bangle, Waterfall, and Orator following. At the shed Maxim held the lead while Orator had dropped into third position. On reaching the back of the course Lady Florin tried to come up with Maxim, and Bangle's jockey was seen to be moving hio charge along. At the railway bend it was thought that Lady Florin would get on terms with Maxim, but the thought was only momentary, as the colt came away again, and when fairly into the straight the race was never in doubt, although Bangle made a rush within three chains from the post; but it was to no purpose, as Maxim bad it all his own way, and won comfortably by three lengths, never having been properly extended. Lady Florin second and Bangle a good, third, Waterfall fourth, and Orator fifth. Time, lmin 51-15 sec. In the totalisators Lady Florin was made favourite. Dividends, £3 8s and £3 16«.

Johnston's b g Orwell, aged, 83t Sib 3 Partner, Wairnna, Psycho, Expelled, also started. There was a splendid race up the straight between the two leaders. Kitty Totara was leading on entering, but Wood took Deceiver up, and before half the distance home was covered he got on terms with the mare, and a splendid finish was witnessed, resulting in Deceiver winning by a head from Kitty Totara. Orwell a medium third, and Wairuna fourth. Time, 2min 18 4-ssec. Dividends, £1 17s and £1 19s.

Flying Handicap, of lOOsovs. six furlongs. Mr. G. G. Stead's be Maxim, 3yre, Sat 21b 1 Mr. Chaafe ns b f Bangle, 3yrs, 7at 111b... 2 Mr. G. P. Donnelly's ch m Pearl, 6yrs, 9st 21b 3 Forester, Turquoise, and Whisper also started. Bangle was the first away at the fall of the flag, having a good lead of Pearl, with Turquoise third, while Maxim got away last but one. Bangle held the pride of place until the straight was reached, when Maxim, who had made up his ground in a wonderful manner, came through his horses, and passing them one by one soon had the leader in in trouble, and after racing a few yards with Bangle, came away and won easily by three lengths from the filly, Pearl a good third a length away. Time, lminl9 4-sth seconds. Dividends, £2 2s and £2 3s. It is now raining and looks threatening for to-morrow's races.
