ISLAND NEWS.

The schooner Maile came into harbour yesterday afternoon from. Tonga and Samoa, and from Captain Lane we learn that when the schooner left the first-named place all was quiet. H. M.s. Opal had arrived there in the early part of September, but nothing was known as to her future movements.

Samoa was left on the 16 th September, six days after the mail steamer Zealandia had touched off Tntuila. When the Maile sailed the German fleet was still at Apia, and the German admiral was then endeavouring to obtain possession of King Malietoa. Tamasese had been proclaimed king in the room of the first-named king. Although the Germans had declared war against Malietoa, nothing in the way of actual fighting had taken place. A proclamation had been issued by the admiral of the German fleet notifying that all who do not place themselves under the rule of "King" Tamasese would be considered rebels, and on the 13th September a meeting was held at Mulinum Point. It was largely attended by natives, and they were called upon to sign allegiance to the new king. A number out of fear did so.
