LORD K. CHURCHILL ON THE DE-

London, September 22. Lord R. Churchill, in addressing a meeting, referred to the agricultural depression, and said it was possible to relieve farmers only by increasing Government allowance to local bodies by three millions.

The Agents-General have informed Mr. Cecil Raikes,, the PostmasterGeneral, that the colonies decline to re-open the agreement arrived at, dividing the cost and receipts of the i new Australian mail contract according Ito the quantity of mails carried. The Treasury of the United States will purchase several million dollars worth of bonds within the next fortnight, which will be the means of relieving the English money market. RELICS OF CAPTAIN COOK. London, September 23. The Standard suggests that under the will of the late Sir Joseph Banks, the collection of relics recently discovered in his museum and purchased by Sir Saul Samuel, belong to the British Museum. DEATH OF A SENATOR. London, September 23. The death is announced of Senator W. D. Washburn. LONDON WOOL SALES. London, September 22. ' At thj wool sales good scoureds and scoured crossbreds are ruling £d to Id, and inferior scoured crossbreds Id to ljd below the closing rates of the JuneJuly series. Greasy and inferior greasy crossbreds are Jd lower, but good greasy crossbreds show an advance of Jd to Id. Western fleece wools are unchanged.
London, September 23. At the wool auctions to-day 10,700 bales were offered. Prices are steady, but the demand is not active. Since the opening of the series 19,000 bales have been withdrawn out of a total of 170,000 offered. The series will close on October 6.

The mails per Orient steamship > irmuz, from Melbourne on August 9, were delivered in London to-day via Naples.
