SMUGGLING BY CHINAMEN
DaNEDiN, Friday. At the Police Court yesterday, two Chinamen were convicted of smuggling cigars from thes.a.Whampoa, The Collector of Customs ! asked for the infliction of the full penalty, as the offence was very rife; buO, on Mr. Carew's recommendation, the information ( was amended, and accused were fined treble the value of the cigars. A VIXJUK * &ON. New Plymouth, Friday. At the performance of the Amateur Opera Company last night, Judge Wilson presented Alfred Wade, of Whangarei, with a certificate of the Koyal Humane Society of Australasia for his plucky conduct when a bull chased his father in November last. Mr. Wade, sen., who was severely hart at one time, and not expects d to live, is now recovering, and can walk about» little bit, but has been injured for life.
