AN ALARM-ING RUMOUR
XHE'MARAROA REPORTED TO BE
ON FIRE. |BY TELEGRAPH. —PKK.SS ASSOCIATION.j DuNEDitr, Frids
Dunedin, Friday. Considerable alarm was created by a pamour which was widely circulated that the Mararoa, which left to-day for Mel» pourne, waß seen to be on fire off Ocean Jjeach. The report appears to have been Started by some paaengera by the Southern jßxpreis train, but no one can say who is the fcothor of it. So far as it is possible to say, there appears to be no foundation for the pumour. The Mararoa took a good many passengers, and the circulation of the report caused great alarm among those who had only parted with their friends and relations «i few houro before. Later, It is now quite certain that the report •with regard to the Mararoa was only a rumour. Cape Saunders lighthouse was communicated with, and information received that the vessel passed there all right, While some persons living ou the higher portions of the city saw the steamer in Mfety after the rumour had been started, electric light being displayed probably gave rise to the rumour.
