[BY TKLKGRAPII. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday, LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Sir William Fitzherbkrt was appointed to-day by His Excellency Speaker of the Legislative Council. The appointment appears in the Gazette this evening. WAIKATO-THAMES RAILWAY. Lands are taken in the Thames and Waihou for the purpoao of the line, amounting in all to about 75 acres. POPULATION. The Registrar-General has given in the returns of the total population of the oolony on the 30th June last. The total population in March was 583,381—that ie, 319,808 males and 273,573 females. In the three mouths between March and Juno the excess of births over deaths was 3249 —that is, 1554 males 1695 females. But against this excess of 3249 has to be set the excess of departures from the colony over arrivals, which is stated at 1917, making an addition to the population, between March 30 and June 30, of 2282. The total number of white population, therefore, is 595,613. To this must be added 41,069 Maoris, making a total of 637,552 souls. PATENTS. John Langford Crumpe, of Devonport, has deposited specifications for a new trap or contrivance to catch fish, birds, or animals. Moses Bate, of Parnell. has deposited specification for an invention to bo called the '• University Gravity Purifier and Separator Machine." Meyer Levineohn (Uobbie and Lcvmsohn) of Aucklaud, has depositod specification for a " duplnx shovel," also for a "seed cleaner." Walter Greenehields, of Auckland, has deposited a specification for an invention for drinking to be etyled the "Jubilee Effervescing Tumbler." Charles R. Lester, of Mount Koakill Koad, has deposited a specification for washing clothes, to be known as the " Mistress Washer. '

|UY TELKGItAPH. — I'HESS ASSOCIATION.] The police constable whose conduct was cnmplaiued of at Mr. Ivess's meeting at .Napier, on Monday night, has been ordered to Wellington, where he will be dealt with. The Wellington Cricket Association have agreed to Major Wardell'e terms in reference to the projected visit of Mr. Vernon's team of English amateur cricketers. The regulations under the parcels poat system, wbich come into operation on October 1 are gazetted. Her Majesty's exequatur, empowering Mr. J. T. Campbell to act as United States Consul at Auckland, is notified in the Gazette.

A (iespatch in the Gazette notifies the prospective termination of the treaty between Great Britain and Nicaragua on the 11th of June, ISSS. .Another claim for compensation for loss of foreshore rights nan been served on the City Council, this time by J. McCarthy, brewer, claiming £6000.
