THE GOLDFIELDS.

Cambriai —The mine manager reports: — The 101b of picked stone reported by wire yesterday was obtained from the stringers on the hangingwall or eastern aide of the drive, No. 2 level, on the No. 2 crossleader, that is being shot down back towards the hangingwall reef. Gold was aeon freely in them today when breaking them down. In the ninth stope west, above No. 2 level, on the hangingwall reef, there are 9 inohes of crushing dirt. Gold was seen freely through the quartz when breaking the reef down to-day. Aβ soon as there ia room, 1 will start driving on the leaders ia the orossoat at No. 3 level. Diamond (Karangahake). — The mine manager reports : The low level is looking very well. The reef is about six inches in thickness, and when breaking down gold can be seen freely through the atone. The etopee above the intermediate level have been very poor, but they are improving, as gold could be seen in the last breaking down. There are from 25 to 30 tons of quartz in the hopper and paddook. Adklink (Karangahake). — The mine manager reports : The winze holed through to the rise on Saturday last, the leader gradually making round to the south, and forming a junction with the main reef at nearly a right angle with the crosscut driven from the level above. The reef is large at the point of holing through (about 2 feet 6 inohes), carriee a good cab of payable stone, and, I think, from appearances will be of greater extent in length than we anticipated, We are timbering up the pass and putting in the shoot, and will in a few more shifts be ready for stoping. There are about 7 tons of quartz to grass, and more ready to break oat ss soon as timbering and the shoot are finished. Crushing : The crushing at the Thames will bo completed about Tuesday next, the 14th instant, and will try to have the gold in the bank by that date. Saxon.—The mine manager reports :— The return wired yesterday does not repreeent the entire return from 110 loads, as the eilver in use. which is charged with gold, was not retorted, and there is a considerable amount of blanketings on hand yet. I shall endeavour to get better terms with the battery for the future. I have put on more hands, and will try to get more stampers, I propose shortly to drive a prospecting crosscut from No. 4 level into the hangingwall hillward of the big heave. The pioked atone and specimens wired this morning were from the seoond stope above the hillward drive at No. 4 level. At No. 3 level the reef looks very well, and I should not be surprised to get gold here any time. Connon and party have given up their tribute, but have not yet finished their crushing. New Prince Imperial.—The mine manager reports: Cleaning up and retorting took place to-day for the return of 470z molted gold. For this yield 41 loads of quartz and 151bs of picked stone were orushed, 29 loads from the etopes between Noa. 2 and 3 levels, and 12 loads from the eastern drive at No. 2 level. The 29 loads produced 88oz amalgam or 320z gold, and the 12 loads 440z amalgam or 15oz gold, but of this lot there were four loads worthless, which were obtained back near the first break which was intersected, so that I consider the whole of the 15oz came from 8 loade broken out at the last clay head or break which crossed the reef. Yon will see that this should pay well once the block is opened up, especially as the ground is easily worked. During the last four days we have driven 34ft into the footwall at the break for the purpose of determining which way the reef had heaved. Two small leads were cut, one of which showed a little gold, but I don't think either of them is identical with that which we have got on the eastern side of the break. I feel satisfied that we have now a payable i block in hand, but in order to carry on work to advantage ventilation is necessary. I have this evening, therefore, started two shifts at the break to rise for a leading stope, which will be continued outwards while the leading stope coming in will be manned by three shifts. There will be no other work carried on until this job is completed, which will take about a fortnight.
