FIRE AT THE THAMES.
EHRENFRIED'S BREWERY BURNED DOWN. (by TELEPHONE.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thamks, Tuesday. Ehrrnfried's brewery was burned down at two o'clock this morning. The upper portion, that is, the wooden part, was destroyed, but the brick part on the ground floor is considered good. The fire originated in one of the upper storeys, probably the highest. The damage is roughly estimated at £2000, but as Mr. Styak, the manager, and Mr. Myers, the book-keeper, are both away, it ie impossible to approach accuracy. There had been brewing on the previous day, and a (ire was necessarily lighted on the second floor. Mason, who was in charge of the brewery, Bays he was round the premises, at 0 o'clock at night, and saw no sign of the tire, and P. Clark, another employe, left the brewery between 5 and 6 and everything appeared right. The large brick building at the rear of the brewery, which contains much valuable stock and machinery, was not damaged, nor was the spirit store, some distance away. The weather was quite calm, and the sparks went upward, otherwise the danger to the surrounding properties' would have been serious. The latest fire alight on the premises was at two o'clock on the previous day. THE INSURANCES. The insurances are all in the London and Lancashire Offiue. and are as follows :— Buildings. £2000; appliances, &c, £1800; stock, £700; total, £4,500. The brewery is considered the most complete in the colony, and cost Mr. Ehrenfried over £10,000. Mr. Ehrenfried left yesterday afternoon for the Thames.
