ST. PETERS CHURCH, SURREY HILLS.
CONCERT IN ST. JAMES' HALL. Last night a concert was given in St. James's Hall, in aid of St. Peters Church, Surrey Hills. There was a very good attendance, and the concert was throughout of a most successful character. An excellent commencement was made with the quartette, "The Shepherd's Song," by Misses Culpan and Main, and Messrs. Burnham and Knox, which was given in a pleasing and appreciative manner, which evidently gave full gratification to the audience. The flute solo, " The Keel Row, " by Mr. Alfred Elyett, displayed more than ordinary musical talent and careful culture in the playing of the youthful performer. The Bong, " White Wings," by Miss Culpan, was an admirable rendering of a beautiful and effective composition ; the fine tone and tasteful modulation of voice being well worthy of the full measure of approbation which it received, Mr. James Knox gave in vigorous and appreciative style, " The Beacon," and was warmly applauded for his effective rendering of the song. Mr. George Clatsam displayed a high degree ox executive skill, combined with musical taste, in his pianoforte solo, and Miss Leila Main in the expressive song, "The River of Years," showed excellent taste and well-trained vocal talent. • The pianoforte duet by Messrs. Clutsam and Martin, which brought the first part of the concert to a clone, was a thoroughly artistic performance, and. received deserved applause. In the second part Miss Julia Knight sang, in splendid voice and with fine effect, the song, "Voi Che Sapete Di Figaro," which was received with a vociferous demand tor an encore, prolonged for several minutes, but as the rale against encores was wisely enforced by the management the audience were denied a repetition of a performance of whioh they might be well excused for insisting for a rehearing. A vocal duet by the Misses Culpan and Main was very pleasingly given, the voices blending in perfect harmony and with excellent effect. Mr. Burnham rendered good service in several itums ; and Mr. Winklemano's performance on the zither, a musical instrument not in common use, was highly appreciated for the swentness and delicacy of its tones. Mr. J. F. Bonnet acted very ably as accompany iut, and also arranged throughout • the details of this very successful concert. ' j
