f jfn. Hanjtat, assistant 'manager of the New Zealand railways, was a passenger by the s.s. Gairloch, whioh left for Waitara yesterday evening. He proceeds overland to Wellington. Mr. Thomas S. Webb haa been authorised by an Order-in-Counoil, published in the* Sew Zealand Gazette of the 17th of February, to erect a wharf under certain conditions on the Kaipara harbour. Mr. F. Battley, the secretary of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, was & passenger to Lyttelton by the Manapouri yesterday. By the s.s. Manapouri yesterday Mr. A. B. Donald and Mrs. Donald were passengers 30 Wellington, en route to Sydney. Mr. Leitch, the actor, was also a passenger for the former-named place. It is stated as showing the improved social condition of the working man in Auckland to what it is in Sydney, that in the former city the savings banks deposits per head are three times greater than in Sydney. There were in the lock-up last evening four persons on charges of drunkenness ; Eliza Pickerton, for larceny ; and Richard Doherty for being in arrears on maintenance Order for the support of his wife. No decision has yet been come to as to the acceptance of tenders for the erection of Trinity Parsonage, North Shore. The matter has been referred to the churoh vestry, which meets in a day or two. Excellent progress is being made with the putting in of the concrete foundations for the new flour mills of Mr. J. C. Firth. They nre of the moat massive character, and the workmanship is being carefully supervised and inspected. ... , To-morrow the s.s. Glenelg is to make another of htr popular excursion trips to the Waiwera Hot Springs. She is to leave lure at two p.m., and will leave Waiwera in time to reach Auckland by about nine clock on Monday morning. A call has been given by the Congregational Church, -Newton, to the Rev. H. J. Lewis, of the Congregational Church in Nelson. He has accepted tho call ; and he is said to be uot only a good preacher, but a man of literary ability. At the R.M. Court yesterday, before H. G. Seth Smith, Esq., R M., it was decided that a tenant renting a house from week to week did not need to give his landlord notice when he was leaving, provided he did so before the end of a week. No time has been lost by the city authorities in procuring a set of grappling-irons for use in case of accidents at tno City Freshwater Baths. The late accident was the first mishap of any kind at the baths, though 40,000 persons have visited and used the bsths. Tliecorner-stoneof the newoffices iuQaeenstreet of the New Zealand Government life Insurance Association will be laid on Tuesday afternoon by His Worship the Mayor. The ceremony will take place at four o clock, and policyholders and the public are invited to attend.
