SIR JULIUS VOGRL.

VISITS AND DEPUTATIONS,

Yesterday Sir Julius Vogel received a num. ber of visitors at the Star Hotel, but their business was iu nearly all cases of a private character, some being merely friendly personal visits. Mr. Monk received word from Sir Julius that he would consider with Mr. Ballance the question of legislation for preventing the further destruction of valuable forests by the careless action of gumdiggers.

Friu'iso Engine at the Thames.—A deputation, consisting of Colonel Fraser, Mayor of Thames, and member for tho goldfields, Messrs. T. Morrin, A. Saunders, and James Frater. The deputation was introduced by Colonel Fraser, and Mr. Morrin then stated the objects of the deputation. He said that their object was to endeavour to procure from the Government some assistance towards drainage pumping at the Thames. As Sir Julius was aware, without tho successful carrying on of drainage works they could not keep the Thames population at tho Thames. At the present time tho pumping engines cost £304 por month, and that amount had to be levied from the different mines. Many of them were not now in a position to pay their quota, and therefore unless assistance could be received from tho Government, and through the County Council, it would be impossible to carry on the pumping operations much longer. The speaker then said the pumps had been purchased at a cost of £2500 from the original proprietors by the drainage trust, and that amount, with the monthly contributions, was more than tho mines could stand. Sir Julius Vogel replied that he would do everything in his power to facilitate the drainage pumping works at the Thames. Hereooguised the gold mining industry aa one of the greatest importance to this part of the colony. He promise.! if the Couuty would represent the matter to the Government, he would do his utmost to have assistance rendered. The deputation thanked Sir Julius, after having received his assurance of assistance, and Colonel Fraser stated 'at he would endeavour to get the Borough Council to co-operate with the County Council to obtain tho objects sought for.
