At a meeting of the Harbour Board a letter was read from the Under-Secretary, enclosing one from W. A. Hill, who stated he. had been connected with metallurgical and mining operations for years. He thought that the Thames foreshore tailings could be worked to advantage, and was prepared to erect a plant to the east inlet allotment*. The Board resolved to inform the Government that any application from Hill would be favourably entertained. I hear Hill is *""' iufl uentially connected in England, and could, if satisfied with the prospects, give the district a valuable recommendation at home. ;....■' , • . . At the inquest on the body of William Henry Organ, a lad aged 15, drowned while bathing in the Omaka river, a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. ; ="• .■ Christcht7Koh, Wednesday. Daring December the Charitable Aid Board relieved 190 cases, about 30 over the average. The increase is partly due to the discharge of unemployed from relief works. Mew Year's Day, a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned. The evidence showed that the boat had been at once lowered, and every effort made to rescue after the alarm was given. A store, dwelling-house, and contents, »k Palmereton, occupied by MoLaw, and owned by C- Haines, were destroyed by fire this morning. ' The building was insured ' for £300 in the Standard, and the stool and furniture for £300 in the Colonial. A brother-in-law of McLaw, while riding near the torn* of the fire, , was thrown from his horse and had, some iribs broken. . ■
