VILLAGE SETTLEMENTS.
- o Mr. Kavanagh, the inspector of village settlements, has returned from his inspection of several blocks in the north, and speaks in the most satisfactory manner of the progress which is being made by the new settlers. The Motukaraka block is situated on the north side of the Herd's Point bay, and there are abont thirty settlers on the blook. The land is mostly light bush, and the inspector found that about 120 acres of bush had been felled, and the houses are wider weigh. The first settlers have only been on the land three months. They complain about the price of stores, but generally speaking they are going on well. One settler who, when placed on the land had only 4s 7d, had the good sum of £12 10s to draw for the clearing whioh he bad done, besides whioh he has been ■ working on the road and building bis whare, and two of the settlers had exhibits of rhubarb, radishes, and peas of good quality at the Herd's Point Agricultural and Pastoral Show. The T&heke block comprises portions of ■ the Onehunga and Parnell endowment lands,' and there are about thirty settlers, but as the bush on this land is heavy as much progress bos not been made as at Motukaraka. Many of them are splitting-timber for their dwellings, and some of them, although not more than three months on the land, had now potatoes for Christmas. Altogether, Mr. Kavanagh is well satisfied with the progress which is being made, and considers that many of them will make good and prosperous settlers. It will b% seen.' by advertisement elsewhere that the Herekino and Whangape lands, Hokianga district, will be open for selection on and after Friday, the 14th instant. ■ .. ... •-. - • ' 4
