The Union Co.'s «.r. Rotomahana, from Southern jiorts and Melbourne, came into bar- ] boar yesterday morning a few minutes after 3 o'clook, with cargo and passengers. Of the passage we learn that the Rotomahana left j Hobson's Bay at 5 p.m. on the 22ud nit. ; passed through Port Phillip Heads at 7.15 p.m., and arrived-in Hobart at 7 a.m. on the "24th: left at 5 p.m. same day, breasted the slanders at 8 a.m. on the 27th, and reached the Bluff *at 1 p.m. ; left at 5 p.m. same day, and moored at Dunedin wharf at 7 a.m. on the 28th, leaving again at .4 p.m. on the 29th; called at the u»ual East Coast ports, leaving Gisborne at 10.30 a.m. the 2nd instant; rounded the East Cape at 4.15 p.m.: pa«ed Caiie ColVille at 5 a.m."on the3rd, and arrived in Auokland at 8.15 a.m. Experienced fresh southerly winds from australia to New Zealaudi moderate variable winds and fine weather up the coast. . . . , , The s.s. Janet Nicoll, hence, arrived at Russell yesterday morning, and after taking in a. supply of coal, resumed her voyage to the Islands last evening. , ... „ The present depressed state o* the Ban Francisco shipping market is attributed to the ■hips chartered by speculators being thrown on the market for rech&rter. This class has made the bulk of recent engagements, and iron ships are not offering freely. Lumber vessels are not go plentiful as was the case a short time ago, and freights are firmer. Wooden vessels are not talked about for charter, owners and agent# apparently bein.g indisposed to compete with iron vessels at current rates. ... The basque Notero left Lyttelton for this port on the 27th ult„ with a cargo consisting of 370 sacks flour, 666 rails, 300 sacks bran, 1271 fciKS flour, 120 sacks sharps, 20 sacks oatmeal, 121 sacks oats, 2605 sacks wheat, 23 cases bacon. For Thames; 80 Backs sharps, 400 Backs wheat.

The ship Piako, Captain Sutherland, left Kapler for London early yesterday morning. The R.M.s. Mariposa resumed her voyage to Honolulu and San Franoiioo yesterday even* ing, starting .a few,minutes after 6 o'clook. The vessel was not very largely patronised with passengers. She was in excellent trim, and should be able to give a good aocount of herself on her run across the Paoifio. Her mall is'due in London on the 7th*February.' The s.s. Clansman is to leave for Russell and Northern ports this evening, and the following boats are also to leave this evening Glenelg for Tauranga, lona, for Maroury Bay and Tairua, and the Wellington for Whangarei." Yesterday was observed amongst the shipping as a close holiday, and although H.M. Customs were opened little' or no business, was done, other than the entering in of ' the s.s., R'otoma-h->nn and the* clearing out of the mall, steamer Mariposa. . * # The. three-masted schooner Himda Isle has been berthed at the Railway Wharf, where she is to land her cargo of coal.

THE lUMUTAKA.

The New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s., Rimutaka again dropped anchor in this harbour, r arriving yesterday morning at about 8 o'clook from London via Cape Town, Dunedic, Lyttelton, and Wellington. It was expeoted that the Rimutaka would reach port on Sunday night, but it was not till the hour named above that she put in an appearance, having come up from Wellington under easy steam, As the mail stormship M-tripos* was occupying the outer berth at the Queen-street wharf, the Rimutaka remained at anchor in the stream uhtil the departure of thw mail steamer, when she was brought alongside the Vacated berth, and the work of landing thi» passengers' luggago, &a„ was at once proceeded with, and this was followed by the oom""menoement of the discharging Vof the vessel's general cargo for here. The Rimutaka "Pit 101 passengers to Auckland. Of that Jibber 71 are for here, 6 for Gisbqrae, 0 for Sydney, and 18 ooastal. Upon the present trip we have to welcome Captain Sutoliff _ as commander, he upon previous visits having occupied the post of ohief officer. The following is tbe list of 'the other officers who are associated with Captain Sutcliff in the navigation of the vessel :— Chief offioer, Mr. Archibald ;; second offioer, Mr. Buchanan; third officer, Mr. Cobb; fourth officer, Mr. Berrymi»n ; first engineer, Mr.. Dallas; second engineer, Mr. Pitoher. Dr. Wright oomes in medical charge. Mr. W. H. Pickett still occupies the onerous position of purser, and to that gentleman we are indebted for the prompt delivery of our files and for other favours. The Rimutaka, it is expected, will be able to get away on her voyage to Wellington on Thursday next. The following iu a brief reoord of her voyage:— Left Kcyal Albert Dock at 4.40 a.m. on Thursday, 18th November, and proceeded to Gravesend. At 11 o'clock embarked 121 steerage passengers, and at 2 p.m. embarked 51 first saloon and 85 second saloon .passengers. Lsft Gravesend at 3,20 p.m. for Plymouth. Anchored off tbe N«ro at 5.20 p.m., and proceeded at 6.15 a.m. on the 19'ih, with very fine weather, arriving at Plymouth at 5 8 a.m. on Saturday 20. At 11.15 a.m. embarked 10 saloon, 11 second saloon, and 21 steerage passengers; alio 309 bags mails, and proceeded for Madeira at 1.20 p.m. Experienced very fine weather crossing the Bay, and arrived at Madeira at 6.45 a.m. on Wednesday, 24. Shipped 300 tons coal, fruits, and vegetables, and left for Capetown at 1.20 p.m. After leaving Madeira experienced light easterly winds and smooth sea, arriving at Capetown on Thursday, 9th Deoember, at 7.15 p.m. Shipped 250 tons coal, 2 bags, 4 paoksts mails, 3 steerage passengers, and proceeded for Port Chalmers at 12. a.m. 011 Friday, 10th. Strong S.W. winds until the 12th, after which light W. winds until the 14th; moderate N. winds until the 16>h, than S. and S.W. moderate to strong until the 20th. Strong northerly winds and moderate sea to the 26th ; 27th to 29th met with strong N.E. gale and very heavy sea. Arrived at Port Chalmers at 4.10 a.m. on the 30th ; highest run 348 miles ; total steam* ing time, 38 days 13 hours 51 minutes. After landing mails and passengers proceeded for Lyttelton, arriving at 9.15 p.m.; landed malls and passengers, and left for Wellington at 11.40 p.m., arriving at 12.15 on the 31st; landed passengers and malls and periodicals, took In 400 tons coal, and left for Auckland at | 4.10 a,m. on the Ist, arriving at Auckland at 1 8.30 yesterday morning.

Waller, agent. » EXPORTS. Per si Oreti: 147 bags flour, 18 sheets iron, 20 packages furniture, 5 sacks coal, 13 packages hardware, 75 packages groceries, 3 tons luggage, 110 packages suudries. The Oreti took her departure for Hokianga at 4 p.m. yesterday with passengers and cargo as above. She returns to Onehunga to-morrow morning, and leaves again at 3 p.m. the lame day for New Plymouth and Wanganui.
