[BY TfILEGRiPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Hamilton, Wednesday evening. Mr. Gelling, the Hamilton Town Clerk, was served with a summons at the instance of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the sum of £36 19s Id, amount of Hospital contribution from Ist of April last to March 31, 1887. It is probably intended to make a test case of this for the Board, as there is a further claim on the borough of £29 lis 4d for charitable aid contribution during the same period. The polling to sanction or veto the raising of a loan of £1500 for the Te Aroha Riding, to construct a road from the township to the Gordon Settlement, will be held on Wednesday next, the 29th inst. As the loan is being raised under the old Act, which does not expire until the end of the year, it will not be necessary to poll a majority of votes recorded on the roll, but a majority of threefifths of those voting will be necessary to secure the loan. The now-celebrated Whatawbata gaming case was brought on again at the Police Court to day, before the R.M. William Shepherd, H. Moore, A. Fergusson, Robert Loane, and Arthur Wright were separately charged by Sergeant McGrath with disposing of a horse by means of a game of chance, namely, by causing the same to be raffled by the casting of dice. The first four pleaded guilty. Loane was discharged with a caution, and the other three were ordered to come up for judgment next Court day, when, from what transpired, it is supposed that they also will be similarly discharged. Mr. Hay appeared for Wright, and pleaded not guilty. Mr. Hay argued that the case had been brought in before, and defendant had been tried and acquitted, and contended that noaecond information could be laid for the same offence, notwithstanding the sixteenth section of the Justices of the Peace Act which stated that if an information was withdrawn the withdrawal would be no bar to other proceedings being taken in the same matter. He argued that the word " other" meant that the proceedings taken must be different to those named by the complaint or indictment, not the information. In this case they were taken by information and, therefore, not covered by the section ; also that the proof adduced was only of an attempt to dispose of, not of actual disposal, Judgment was reserved till next Court day. Cambridge, Wednesday. Mr. E. Bundle's four-roomed cottage, on Hamilton Road, was destroyed by fire between five and six o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Brindle was away at Hamilton, and the I fire cannot be accounted for. The building [ was insured in the South British,
