Buttle lectured a few evenings ago at Hastings on the Maoris. During the lecture he said he had hitherto bad an if , -a that he waa a tall man. But that evening he got alonside Constable Pickering, and having to bend his neck back to look at the top of that officer had quite dispelled any notion he might have bad of his own high standing in society.
