At the School Committee meeting last night, a resolution was passed that the clerk be instructed to take legal action at once against parents who, having received notice in accordance with the requirements of the Education Act, have failed to send their children to school; also that notices be immediately issued to the parents of other children who are irregular in their attendance. Professor Swallow and a talented oompany of vocalists from Auckland gave a performance in the Public flail to-night. Thames, Wednesday. At the Congregational Church last •▼ening the Rev. B. L. Thomas, the new pastor of the congregation, was welcomed by a recognition meeting and soiree. The ministers of all the other denominations were present. [press association.) Wellington, Wednesday. The Wairarapa and East Coast Pastoral and Agricultural Society's show was held at Carterton to-day. The show is a most successful one, there being 480 entries of all classes. Samuel Des Farges, the debtor who was imprisoned for negligence in keeping his books, has been released on a writ of habeas corpus on the ground of irregular commitment, Those Maori prisoners who were sentenced to a month's imprisonment at the last criminal sessions, were released to-day, looking all the better for their inoaroeraion. Te Whiti has still two months to terve. Christchpkch, Wednesday. .At the meeting of the Hospital Board to-day a letter was received from the Inspector of Prisons stating that the Minister of Justice saw no reason to alter his opinion that delirium tremens cases could lawfully be remanded to the hospital for treatment, and that therefore such oases would not be admitted into the prisons after Maroh 31st next. The Board decided to communicate with other Hospital Boards in the colony, with the view of concerted action being taken to prevent the hospitals being need for the reception of these cases. Dunkdin, Wednesday. The proposed amalgamation of Sargood's with Ross, Glendinning, and Co. has fallen through. ______
