London, October 28. Beach is very indignant at Hanlan's pretensions re the sculling championship, and offers to row him on the Parramatta river for £500 or upwards. Matterson has thrown out a similar challenge to Hanlan. London, October 29. Hanlan, in reply to Beach's challenge to row him on the Parramatta, says he is willing to row him on the Nepean. SCULLING MATCH. London, October 28. Matterson and Kemp have been matched to scull on the Parramatta in May next for £400 a-side. THE EMIGRATION BUREAU. London, October 28. The emigration bureau has announced that it is willing to accept trade and labour councils' reports from the colonies. NEED FOR THE CALLIOPE DOCK. London, October 28. H.M.s. Nelson will be recalled shortly, as she is too large to be docked on the station. H.M.s. Northampton will probably replace her.
THE, NEW RECIDIVISTES. London, October 28. Females constitute one-eighth of the number of the first gang of recidivistes to be sent to New Caledonia. The average number of offences is fifteen. QUEENSLAND GOLDMINING. London, October 28. The capital of the Mount Morgan Goldmining Co. ha 3 been subscribed twofold. The Kaboonga mine, Gympie, Queensland, with a capital of a quarter of a million, is announced.
THE VACANT PROFESSORSHIP. London, October 28. A committee, which includes Mr. Matthew Arnold, Professor Max Muller, and Mr. Leslie Stephen, have selected four of the applicants for the Professorship of Literature at Sydney University. The final selection will be made on Tuesday next. THE STATDE OF LIBERTY. London, October 29. The immense statue of Liberty, presented to America by M. Bartholdi, has been formally dedicated in New York. THE EDUCATION QUESTION IN FRANCE. London, October 29. The Elementary Education Bill has been passed through the French Chamber by a substantial majority. The Bill forbids religious instruction in schools. THE IRISH PATRIOTIC UNION AND THE COLONIES. London, October 29. The Irish Patriotic Union are appealing to the colonies for assistance. SIR P. C. OWEN. London, October 28. It is announced that Sir Philip Ounliffe Owen will cease his connection with the Exhibition at the end of December. * THE SUEZ MAILS. . London, October 28. j The steamship Iberia, from Melbourne (September 17), arrived at Plymouth co-day. * . v Adelaide, October 29. The Orient Co.'s Cuzco, with the outward mails of September 24 arrived this morning.
