ROSS UNITED GOLD MINING COMPANY.
The following particulars respecting the above mine were inadvertently omitted from Mr. Saunders' monthly report, published in yesterday's Herald :— During the month none of a most important and cheering character has been reoeived from the Rosa United mine, on the West Coast of New Zealand. Home time since it was decided by the directors to push on the drives in the direction of the rich run of gold which was worked so profitably in Caisius , mine, and, after driving some weeks, very rich wash dirt was tapped, and when the extent of it had been demonstrated by sinking monkey shafts in various directions, it waa decided to extend No. 7 level in order that the wash dirt might be worked more conveniently from a lower level. So soon as this level came under the run a rise was put up, and in order to satisfy shareholders four set» were washed, with an average of over four ounces to the set. '1 his is considered very rich, and will pay handsomely. Since the gold was struck the men have been employed making passes, extending the No. 7 level still further, so as to tap the wash at the lowest point, and by this means the layer can be worked to greatest advantage. It will, of course, take some time to open out the mine for working, but in a week or two a large number of men should be put on, and as the ground ie further opened out two hundred men could easily be profitably employed. It has been calculated that each man in an eight hours' shift should be able to show a profit of ten pounds to the company, calculating that the washdirt maintains its present value. Steps are being taken to secure the mine being opened up in a thoroughly workmanlike and efficient manner, and with a large staff of men the output of gold should be very large indeed, the main point being to develope the mine in suoh a way that a large number of men may be profitably employed. Up to this date 17 act« have been washed for a return of 4Soz of gold, and this is the work of one pick, for one week. When it is considered what can be done when a face is opened, and there is elbowroom to put in a large body of men, it is apparent that the returns will be very large, shares remain steady at about 10s 6d to 11s for paid up shares.
