CENSUS RETURNS, ISS6. Mr. J. Kino, the Census Enumerator for part of the Auckland provincial district, has kindly favoured us with tho official returns of population and dwellings as forwarded by him to the Registrar-General on June 28. A column which we have added, showiug the population of each district according to the Census of 1881, will enable our readers to mark the great progiess which has been made in the last five years in that portion of the provincial district comprised within Mr, King's jurisdiction. The increase, as is known by summary returns already published, haß been sustained throughout the whole of the district. CENSUS, ISS6. —OFFICIAL RETURNS.

The following are the immigration3and emigration returns for June Ihe arrivals were: From the United Kinedom, 652; Queensland. 1 ; New South Wales, 269 ; Victoria, 155 ; Tasmania, 236; other places, 80 : total, 1183. Th« departures were : To the United Kingdom, 238; New South Wales, 674 ; Victoria, 497 ; Western Australia, 50 ; Tasmania, 29 ; other places, 26 : total, 1544. The details of the arrivals were : At Russell, 1 ; Auckland, 290; Wellington, 99; Napier, 1; Nelson, 2; Lyttelton, 16; Timaru, 3 ; Dunedin, 590 ; Invercargill, 181: total, 1183 The departures were : From Mongonui, 1 ; Russell, 4 ; Auckland, 679 ; Wellington, 81 ; Napier, 15 ; Lyttelton, 213; Timaru, 11 ; Invercargill, 540. GOLD EXPORTS. The following are the returns of the quantity and value of gold exported from New Zealand for the half-year ending 25th June : —Auckland, 19,1470z, value £76,190 ; Wellington, 470z, £169; Marlborough, 2oz, £8; Nelson, 1165 )z, £4656; West Coast, 57,370 oz, £229.284 ; Otago, 34 9S9oz, £140,806' total, £112,7200z, £451,113. For the corresponding six months of 1885 the total was 113,2580z, value £452,049. CUSTOMS RETURNS. The Customs returns for the quarter ending June 30 were : —Auckland, £70,915 ; Thames, £1319 ; Hussell, £151 ; Mangonui, £30; Hokianga, £70; Kaipara, £195 ; I'auranga, £279 Poverty Bay, £22(i0; New Plymouth, £1095 Patea, £183 ; Wanganui, £3912; Foxron, £33; Wellington, £61,426. A Southern paper estimates that every penny per lb for wool represents upwards of £360,000 to our colonial flockowners. It may interest some of our readers to know that the oldest house in New Zealand is the residence of Mr. James Kemp, at Te Kerikeri, Bay of Islands. It was built by some of the early missionaries in 1818, and gives a good idea of the durability of some of the New Zealand woods. The frame is oi totara, the floor of tanakaha, whilst the lining, ceiling, weatherboarding, etc., are of kauri. The floor is to all appearance as sound as when first laid. The house is a comfortable residence, and, unless destroyed by fire, bids fair to see the cloao of the i present century.
