COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Heeald Office. ; Thursday evening. BUSINESS in the import market has been by no means brisk this week. Orders from retail distributors are confined to sorting tip lines. Island business has, however, been above the average, the requirements for the schooners Olive and Julia Pryce and steamer Eiplorer putting soma vitality in the trade, otherwise sluggish. It was expected that the crucial 4th of the month would disclose some weak spots, and the remit fully confirms anticipations. _ The groat difficult in collecting money is putting a good many into a tight corner ; and in the case of country storekeepers, depending on sales of timber and gum, the welt-nigh impossibility of realising is seriously militating against the meeting of trade engagements. Scarcely any alteration in values of oversea goods has occurred. A better demand has sprung up for essentially winter lines, such as oatmeal, cocoas, etc.; »Iho seasonable" liquids and kerosene. The 7000 caaes of the latter, (jx, Wolfe, have not Jod to any reduction in '

market price. At present figures. Fiji and Island requirements can be executed, orders of late haying largely gone preferentially to Sydney. , . , A fairly active inquiry keeps up for teas and corn«acks, the latter especially hardening in price, and now quotable at 5b 9d per dozen, the overstock having been brought down by tue late demand from the East Coast. 3100 casks of German cement, ex Sidlaw, nave been placed in one parcel. „ n In the sugar market, prices remain « m £23, and £23 respectively, for No. 1. 2, and o Company's sugar. The late advance in Sydney whites is noted as a sign of strength. 1600 mats of Yarraville arrived per Wairarapa. Dried fruits are very firm in price, althougn buyers show great reluctance in giving advanced figures. There is ft curious fancy afloat that merchants' rates should not be regulated by London costs, but by tbe retail prices in Karangahape Road. We observe by late cable messages to Melbourne that good elemes are practically unobtainable for shipment in London, and that currants continue exceedingly scarce. ~ , The only item worth recording as regards tobacco is the arrival of a, parcel of Queen of the Sea, ex Wolfe. The syndicate for loading the Notero for Kimbsrley ports show enterprise, and a lot of stuff will doubtless go in her under tbe admirable arrangements made for selling from the ship's hold on arrival. We hear the Bay Coal Company have obtained the contract for the supply of the big pump, and that the prospects at the mine are particularly bright. The demand for coal keeps strong, and when the No. 3 level is opened out for working, the output is likely to be doubled. A serious continuation of the depression in the timber and building tr*de is to be noted. The fact of the 3a»h and Door Company a shares being sold for ?8s speaks volumes. We quote : Old maize at 4s ; new. 3s 3d to 3s 6d ; oats, 2s 9d : milling wheat, 4s 6d to 4s 9d ; chick wheat, scarce, at 3s 0,1 to 4s ; potatoes, £4 10s. per ton, with an upward tendency. In the local produce market, butter is quoted at lOd per lb wholesale, and Is per lb retail. Fggs have receded a little, and are now quoted at Is Cd per dozen wholesale and Is 9d per dozen retail. BThe Customs duties to-day were £100313s Id. KAURI GUM MARKET. There is no change in thn gum market, and East Coast still in the old state of deadlock: Supplies for month so far, about 76 tons.
