THE KIMBERLY GOLDFIELDS
A WARNING VOICE. A correspondent of the Sydney Evening News writes with reference to the newlydiscovered goldfield in Western Australia as follows : —" Anticipating that many men will attempt to go there quite unprepared for the difficulties they will have to contend with, he thinks it hie duty to raise a warning voice. Whether Cambridge Gulf or Derby should be selected as the landing point, the would-be digger would require at leaet £250. lie [would want four horses, three packers and one to ride; and if he put 2001b on each psckhorse, he would have enough rations to carry him to the fields and last him three or four months when there. The gold already obtained has been got in the little "allies in the watersheds of the Eloire, Panton, and Mary rivers, and there is no water in these except in the wet season,, which begins in December and ends in March. 'J he accounts in the papers have been greatly exaggerated as to tbe amount of gold obtained, which is about 400oz in ail, the value at the Melbourne Mint being £3 13s 4d per ounce. There is no road to follow, and those who intend to go to the field must have r knowledge of the bush. They must also be prepared for blacks, and with medicine for fever and ague, or sourvy; There is a large ex tent of auriferous country; but it will take a long time to test it properly, and no one should throw up a billet to go there. When he left Derby there were twenty or thirty men pat on by the Government Resident to clear the streets of the town for their tucker. They had had about sufficient money to pay their fares in the steamer, and could go no further."
