A good steady bu»iuess has boon done during the past fortnight in all departments. Auction sales hava been well attended, and fair prices obtained. Potatoes of gocd quality are in fair demand, hut few of the local grown are such, and bate to bo sold s.t very low prices. Bat few now on hand. Tho Canterbury ones ar» not of first-class quality ; a good sample is worth £4 103 to £5. Carrots and pumpkins are aellinp at low prices. Onions, but few to hand Chceac in fair demand, and all cleared out. Bjccn: But little to hand. Keally good is wanted iiecond-clais will only sell at low prices. Butter: No goad to hand ; second-class and inferior difficult to ■ell at any piice. Fruit: Local supply greatly decreased, but pries have Eot advanced much on accopnt of the .shipuisnts from Qotmrt, which have sold at low prices, being inferior. Furniture has boon in good tleoiaud, both privately and at .auction, Monday: Salo of witches, jewollery, etc., at mart. There was a good attendance, and a fair amount of business was none. A cottage of four rooms with scullery, with freehold allotmont, situated in Haslett-street near New North Road, sold for £160 cash. Tramway shares were not sold. the reserve was 10s. Tuesday: sale of pianos, household furniture, etc., at mart. It was wall attended, fair competition, and a large quantity sold at satisfactory prices. Wednesday: Sale of produce, local and Hobart fruit, etc. A good number were present, but bldaing was languid, Ilcbart fruit was not in good condition. Prices ruled low. Hobart apples sold at 3s to 6s3d per case; local apples brought ljd to 2d per lb, pears 1 Jrl to 2d. Thursday: Sale of household furniture, etc., at a house in Grey-street. A fair attendance, and satisfactory price: wore outlined. Sale of jewellery, etc., at mart was fairly well attended, but bidding was very languid ; but little sold, at low prices. The bulbs from Hobart also sold at very low prices. Friday : Market-day sale of poultry, produce, fru.t, and groceries, at mart. A lair supply, large attendance, and large quantity of stuff changed hands at fair prices. Poultry was entered in good quantity, and in better condition than of late, but prices wore not much higher. Pigs; continue at a very low price, and difficult to sftll at that. AUCKLAND STOCK AND SHAKE MARKET The stringency of the money market has affected stocks for some time past; transactions have been of the most limited character, and prices continue very low, still there i 3 not much disposition to force sales ; in most cases shares are held for baiter times. It is difficult to get mora than six to seven per cent, for lar*B sums on good freehold socuritiis. 6m»ll sums have been invested at eight per cut. The population of Auckland shows a very largo increase during the last five year* placing, this city in the position of being the Dremier city (if New Zealand ; and all things considered, though trade is restricted, business i* in a fairly sound condition. The Bank of New Zealand have paid the usual dividend, and shares are now quoted at £20. Sales havo been made at lower rates. but the market appears to he hardening somewhat. Gas shires maintain the quoted rales, auout £11, and New Zealand Insurance shirts have been dealt in at £3 103. All other stocks ar.) dull of sa'e.
