She is an old vessel, being built at Sunderland twentyfive years ago. An inquiry into the wreck of the Star of the Mersey was held last night at the Customhouse. Captain Christian says he left Kaipara on Wednesday, and on Thursday, at 3.30 p.m, the vessel sprung ft leak. Notwithstanding all efforts, he found at midnight 2 feet of water in the hold. Kept on pnmping, but finding, at 4 in the morning, the water had Increased to 6 feet he mado for laud. At 9 yesterday morning brought up off end of breakwater. The water was then over the 'tween deck beams. Let go anchors and hoisted signals of distress. Harbourmaster came aboard, and took him and crew off. Tho vessel parted her cable as soon as they left, and went ashore. The cause of the leak was, the captain says, one of the butts starting. The decision come to wu that no blame was attaohed _to anyone. A large portion of cargo, consisting of - baulk and flitch kauri timber, has been recovered, and will be sold shortly. Thero were 130,000 feet of timber on board, which was insured in the New Zealand office for £550, the freight being insured for £200 in the same office.
