THE GOLDFIELDS.
MONTHLY SUMMARY. (from our own correspondent.] Coromandel, Monday. Therk is a slight improvement in the outlook iB mining matters. Of late everything has been so exceedingly dull that any change must be for the better. At the preeent time there is very little actual work going on, but some time ago the County Council, talcing advantage of the Government subsidy, sent out several parties to prospect! in vrrions directions, and at least in two cases this has borne fruit. About a fortnight ago Sutherland's party, in the Waikoromiko creek, struck a rich patch of specimens, which caused quite a rush to that locality, but so far the find does not appear to be of any permanent importance. The leader is very small, and not continuous, bnt at anyrate the present find will encourage othura to persevere, and may lead to something more permanent. A considerable number of men are now prospecting in that directionThe other find is more important, or at least may lead to very important results. This find is situated at Manaia, and is called the Victoria. For months past a party of men have been working there, and always getting a little gold, and after a time they decided to sink a winze on the reef, and for some months they have persevered in this direction, but would have been compelled to give up except for the assistance rendered under claee 2, of aid to prospectors They have now sunk some 80 feet from the surface, and opened out for driving. The last 20 feet of sinking showed gold very freely, and since they have started to drive they have got some large blocks of stone, showing rich patchee of the precious metal. The reef is first-rate dark blue quartz, about 18 inches thick, and all who have seen it are very much pleased with its appearance, and predict a good return from it in the future. Manaia Claim.—The manager is sending down a percol of about 10 tous to be crushed. Unfortunately the cost of transporting the stuff to Coromandel is against it, and there is rot sufficient inducement to erect a machine in that neighbourhood at present, although a very good return is expected from this lot, and the mine looks fairly well. Union Bkach and Kafan(U.— is a rumour goiti? the rounds which has a strong probability about it, that the Kapanga and Union Beach claims will both be set going again with English capital. I have heard of negotiations for machinery and other matters, which leave very little doubt as to the fact, and the next incoming mail is expected to bring definite particulars, Triumph.—A large quantity of stuff has been taken out and put through the battery, but the result was rather disappointing. The ground has now been let on tribute. Tokatka.—The company are now doing a considerable amount of prospecting in the No. 3 level. A number of tributera are working different blocks with varying results. Royal Oak.—-T ho tributere, Mnyn and party, had a splendid crushing of picked atone a short time ago, and obtained a fine return of 118ozs of gold. They have still a large quantity of good general stuff to go through. Prospecting is going on in several parts of Paul's creek, and, although a little gold is i»ot occasionally, nothing of any importance has beeD found lately. The same remarks also apply to the Waikoromiko creek. Matam itaharekkke.Block.— There have been several miners lately prospecting on the Matamataharekeke block who have got a very fair show of gold. Indeed one party, the McNeils' have a show good enough to sluice, and they are making preparations to go into it on a large scale. Thk Tiki.-The Tiki district has not done much during the past month, but there are good prospects in several places. The Castle Rock is much the best, and the owner has just sent in a parcel of six tons to the Nil battery, which, together with some 1501b of picked stono, will give a large return. The mine is looking as well as ever, and will be a prize for the fortunate owner. Matawai.—The manager is opening up a large reef at the back of the main reef, and it is likely to turnout well. Nelson, —Another large heap of payable quai v/. is accumulating at thin claim, and the reef looks splendid. Wellington.—The manager is getting out payable quartz from a large reef, striking through the ground. There are several prospectors out in this district, who aro well satisfied with their prospects.
