VOLUNTEERING NEWS.
Drill.—On account of the Fancy Fair in the Drillshed, the usual company drills have been entirely suspended daring the present wsek. Colonel Lyon has granted the use of th<} building for a fortnight altogether. Gordon.Rifles.The Gordon Rifles complete the competition for the medal presented by Mr. John White, of Victoria-street, to-day, at fch® Mount Eden range. Volunteer 11. T. Buckley is at present leading by one point, Oolour-Sergeims Buchanan coming next. A close finish is anticipated. The first competition for Captain White's medal will also take place at the same time. Ranges for each: 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards ; five shots at each range. Firing will commence at half-past one p.m. Resignations. Since the expiration of the capitation year, numbers of resignations Lave been sent in from all the companies in the district, and there is now quite a pile at the volunteer office. It is rumoured that in those from men who joined during the " Russian scare, the Government intend not accepting them until the twelve months for which they were sworn in has expired. However, a number of the arms have been taken into otore.
