WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[from odb own cokrkspondknts.]

Hamilton, Tuesday. The Borough Council has resolved to wait and see what action the Waipa and Waikato County Councils will take in the matter of resisting the payment of demands made under the Hospital and Charitable Aid Aot, before complying with the demand made upon it by the Auckland Board. The Wednesday railway return tiokets issued to Hamilton, as the market town of Waikato from all other stations, are coming intense, and many up-country settlers may be aeen in our streets and shops now on that day of the week. The Borough Council overdraft has reached the sum Of £585 5s Id, higher than it was two years ago. A sum of £175 13s 9d now available from Government subsidity will be applied in liquidation so far as it will go. Cambridge, Tuesday.

The codlin moth pest has established itself here, but while perfectly willing that the most stringent provisions of the Aot shall be made to apply to all orchards in whioh its avages are being carried on, the public are determined to insist that the provisions of the Order-in-Counoil prohibiting the introduction of apples from countries in whioh the disease prevails shall also be strictly enforced. It is no use, nor is it just to allow our orchardiets to be harrassed with precautionary acts under the Aot, while at the same time the supply of codlin moth is kept up by importation from outside aa is now the case, Auokland being periodically supplied with apples from Tasmania and California. In the case of the latter the Act is simply evaded, as has been already pointed out, by shipping to Australia and repacking again for the New Zealand market. Kihikihi, Tuesday. Messrs. A. J. Bertram,- \V. Johns. F. Moody, and J. Walton, have been appointed members of the cnief committee of the Waikato Horticultural Association to represent the looal district, comprising Rangiaohia, Te Rahu, Kihikihi, and To Awamutu.
