THE CASWELL SOUND MARBLE COMPANY.
[by telegraph.—press association. Wellington, Friday. At the fourth annual meeting of the Caswell Sound Marbls Company, the director! announced they were anxious that the quarry should be further tested, and had agreed to subscribe £1000, provided other shareholders or tho outside public would subscribe a similar amount. This would mean an additional capital of £2000, but it was not expected that more than half of tho amount would be required. Mr. J. D. Baird, who at the request of his fellow-directors had visited the works, said he must confess that he was disappointed at the appearance of the place. There was no question as to the quality of the marble : it was all that could bo desired. If the quarry were nearer to Wellington than it was, a use could be made of the refuse, and a good profit obtained. The quarry, however, was too far down the coast to ever become a paying concern. It was no use to disguise the fact that, from this visit to the Sound, hewas convinced that it was no use continuing operations. He, however, would be glad to see some experts from Melbourne visit the quarry, and he was willing to bear a portion of thu expense, He did not think it possible to get good blocks of marble from Caswell Mound. He thought the refuse would make excellent cement. A further test is to be made.
