Notwithstanding the acknowledged depression in trade, and the generally overstocked state of the Import market, merchants are fairly busy in filling sorting up lines. The San Francisco mail advices are not encouraging in respect to our staple product, gum—the home and American markets showing no signs of recovery from a long state of depression in this commodity. The low priceß ruling in the local market are reducing the volume of business from the North and East Coast districts. Tho scarcity of kerosene is a feature of the market; several orders from Fiji were only filled with difficulty. Bice is hardening, Japan dressed being now quoted at £24, and Rangoon £19, duty paid. There is a steady trade in bottled beer of best brands, but, on the whole, the liquor trade is in a bad state. Shipments of second-class white sugars from Fiji have been placed at from £20 to £21. In bond company's quotations continue at £31 for No. 1, and £27 10s for No. 2, and £23 10s for No. 3. Large sales of Nailrod and twist tobacoo. Watson and McGlll's make have been made during the week principally to South Island buyers, at Is 2£d. Messrs. S. Cochrane and Son sold by auction to-day allotment No. 7 section 1, In the village of Fanmure, containing four aores, for the sum of £153 5a 7d. At the same time a house for removal at Kingsland was sold for £12 ss. The Customs receipts to-day were £1316 8s 3d STOCK AND MINING ASSOCIATION. Auckland, August 24, 1885.
