FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE WAIKATO.

[by telegraph.-- correspondent.] Hamilton, Monday. A iatal aocident happened to-day to a daughter of Mr. Tretheway, who had charge of Mr. Gribble'a farm on the river between Hamilton and The Narrows. It appears that early this morning Mrs. Rogers, the wife of a settler living on the Obaupo-road, went over with a son of Tretheway's, aged fifteen, to Tretheway's bouse, taking with them a horse, to ask the loan of Tretheway's spring cart, as Mrs. Rogers wished to go over the river to Tamahere to see & daughter of hers in service with Mr. Barugh. Tretheway lent the trap, and Mrs. Rogers and young Tretheway started to go over with two of the latter's sisters, one aged 14, and the other the deceased, Annie, aged 11. They crossed the Narrows bridge, going well enough till they got to the long Narrows embankment, on the Tamahere side, when Mrs. Rogers remarked to the boy that he had better make the horse keep the centre of the road, as he seemed to keep too near the side. The words were soarcely spoken, when the wheels of the cart got over the embankment. The boy and the elder girl jumped out unhurt, ban Mrs. Rogers and the deceased remained in the cart, which fell over Mrs. Rogers, and on to the girl. As soon as the former scrambled from underneath she heard the deceased Annie Tretheway cry out to her, "Oh, Mrs, Robert, help me out," and found that the side of the cart had iallea across the girl's chest. She tried to lift the cart bu>t could not, and in a few minutes the child was dead. Meantime help had been brought in the persons of Messrs. Gill and Thompson, but when they arrived the child was dead. The body was then removed to Mr. Gill's house, and intelligence wired to Sergeant-Major McGovern who, unable to secure the services of the regular coroner, Dr. Beale, who was engaged with his medical duties, got Mr. Seerancke to go out and hold an inquest, which took place this afternoon, the jury consisting of Mr. B. Ewen (foreman), and Messrs. Thompson, Hay, Pennell, Mmaghue, Rogers, and Hoskins, when the above facts were elicited, and a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
