THE FRENCH SOCIETY.

TO THE EDITOR, Sir, — I read in a local in your Saturday's issue that Mr. Peltzer stated at a pub!' • meeting that the original Soci6t£ Littgraire Fraugaise of Auckland " had died out, or at any rate was in extremis." L beg to give to that statement a most emphatic denial. Our society possesses now about 400 volumes, and in order to enable all students of the French language and literature to join it, and to have the benefit of its well selected library, we have reduced the quarterly subscription from 5s to 2s 6d. The reason why no meeting was held since the 27th of June is that as Mr. Francis had generously offered the society the use of a hall in his new residence, Symonds-sfcreet, and as the first session of the year was over, the committee decided to open the second session in the new premises. Some delay having taken place in the completion of the hall, it ha* been agreed that the meetings should be resumed at the Y.M.C.A. buildings next Saturday at eight p.m. So that, after all, the French Literary Society has not died out," and is not likely to do so. 1 shall refrain, for the present, from passing any remarks on the step taken by the promoters of the new society you speak of In making such a statement as the one I referred to, and I beg to remain—Yours, &0., C. DB L'Eau, President of the Soci6t<s Litteraire Frangaise.
