THE RETRENCHMENT FARCE.
WU i.U Ui.l x raiVV£i« to THE editor. Sir,—Another attempt at municipal reformation has been made by the City Council of Auckland, and another signal failure is the result. How long those deceptive and ludicrous farces are intended to be enacted is a question, I presume, for that celebrated body only to determine, as the pookets and feelings of the ratepayers seem but a secondary consideration with such a sublime composition. I think myself that it is about time those gentlemen should be thoroughly ashamed of such imbecility. I would imagine that when they find that they really cannot perform the duties of their office in a satisfactory manner the only manly course open to them is to resign (however humiliating that may appear to the magnanimous mind of a city councillor). It is certainly more dignified to do so than remain in office against the express wishes of their constituencies, and let others more competent occupy their places. Truly the public of Auckland have already ample proof without anything further of their utter incompetency. Yet they still seem to cling most adhesively to their respective cosy arm-chairs, and will do so I expect until the ratepayers demand their abdication.—l am, &c., Ratepayer.
