The following gentlemen are gazetted Superintendents of Quarantine: — H. 8. McKelUr, Wellington ; Thomas Hill, AnckJand ; Alexander R. Rose, Lyttelton; and James Hackworth, Donedin. NELSON, Thursday. A man named W. H. Lloyd was brought from Collingwood in a steamer today, and was at once taken to the Hospital. Ten minutes after admission he died, the cause being heart disease. He was about SO yean of age, and had been a miner in the Collingwood district for 26 years. CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Mr. C. L. Harper, M.H.R. for Avon, addressed his constituents at Papanui tonight. He avowed himself a supporter of the Ministry as long as they adhered to the policy they- , had enunoiated when taking office. He received a vote of confidence. Mr. D. McMillan, M.H.R. for Coleridge, addressed his constituents at Sheffield last night. He announced himself a general sapporter of the Government, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. The Harbour Board have resolved to support the action taken by other Harbour Boards to have an alteration made in the Harbour Aot bo that the Government should be required to pay wharfage on material imported by it.
The first annual report pf the Sailors' Home shows that during the thirteen months the institution has been open, 440 seamen have been accommodated there. The expenditure has been £891, and the receipt™ have left a debit balance of £173.
His Excellency the Governor hag informed the Board of Governors of Canterbury Col* lege that under the present arrangement* he cannot interfere.in regard to the difficulty that has arisen between the Board and the University Senate about the introduction o< certain plays of Terence in the past Latin course. » • ■ • ■■•;■
DUNEDIN, Thursday. An inquest was held on a five year-old 'ohild, who was supposed to have died from neglect of the parents, but the medical evidence disolosed nothing beyond the fact that of the ohild having been very weak and suffering from wasting disease. The jury considered the parents were deserving of grave censure for not proouring medical attendance.
At the Police Court to-day ten boys, ranging in ago from 7 to 10 years, were charged with stealing 12lbs. of raisini. The parents were ordered to chastise them. The father of one suggested that the parents should hive been summoned, as they would be having babies in Court yet.
